Mattress Fire

181 T. B. Watts Rd.

Saturday, August 10, 5:11 PM

High Point Fire District, alongside Pageland Rescue and Lifeguard EMS, responded to a reported mattress fire with an associated drug overdose at a triplex located on T. B. Watts Rd.

Upon arrival, Engine 51 found that bystanders had successfully removed the burning mattress from the apartment and extinguished the flames in the yard. However, the occupant of the apartment displayed aggressive behavior toward the bystanders, prompting intervention by Sheriff's Deputies, who subsequently subdued the individual. Lifeguard EMS assessed the occupant for any injuries.

Firefighters entered the apartment to find it full of smoke. A thermal imager was used and detected excessive heat at the ceiling level. Firefighters deployed a hose line from Engine 51 and utilized hooks to pull down the ceiling, enabling them to cool the bare wood in the attic space.

Additionally, firefighters forced entry into the adjacent apartment, which also had smoke but did not exhibit signs of excessive heat.

There were no operational smoke alarms in the apartment.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time.
